“You have commanded Your precepts to be observed diligently.” (Psalm 119:4)
Diligence is distinct from ability. And it is quite possible to trust ability and neglect diligence. But ability has nothing to do with character, and diligence has everything to do with it.
In mundane matters, diligence is a sign of self control; it should be practiced with humility; it is a sign of cherished sense for duty and obligation; it is a desire to win approbation; and it is reverence for higher things.
What about in the sphere of obedience for Divine matters? Simply put, the features of diligence remain precisely the same as what they are for mundane matters. Let's go through the list again, but this time let's reflect on them in the context of Divine matters:
Diligence is a sign of self control – to conduct our lives within the bounds of God's laws and precepts;
Diligence should be practiced with humility – with total recognition that our lives are not our own.
Diligence is a sign of cherished sense for duty and obligation – to God who is King over all;
Diligence is a desire to win approbation – from God, the supreme Judge; and
Diligence is reverence for higher things – for God's ways are perfect.
