Three Defining Qualities of God (Part 2): Goodness

When we think of God, what comes rushing into our minds? Is God the first awakening thought when we arise from sleep in the morning? Is He the last thought upon our minds when we go to sleep at night?

If He is, which of His qualities are contained in those thoughts?

Three prevailing qualities come to mind: Holiness, Goodness, and Love.

The next quality we will address is GOODNESS.

GOODNESS

Psalm 145:9: “The LORD is good to all, and His tender mercies are over all His works.”

When we say God is good, we must mean that God possesses that character which constitutes goodness in us.

The goodness our faith attributes to God is perfect goodness. This quality exists in Him without defect or contradiction. In God, the qualities that render a moral being good exist in perfect fullness and have complete freedom of exercise.

God’s goodness is not affected by our failures. Rather, He is always good to all of us and His mercies are over all of His works.

How do we replicate this attribute of our Heavenly Father?

It is written in Leviticus 19:17-18:

“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Yeshua also highlighted this verse as the most important commandment in parallel with Deuteronomy 6:5:

“You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.”

Let us not take God’s goodness for granted. Instead, just as our Father in Heaven is good to all, may we learn to extend goodness to everyone around us. May we learn to extend mercy to those of whom we have influence upon in our lives.

In human terms, this is what it means to act in perfect goodness.
