Reflections from Missions Trip to Guyana: May 22–June 5, 2023
On May 22nd, a team of six left from Canada on a missions trip to Guyana for two weeks. The team included Bonnie Hamilton from Tent of Oliver Foundation.
The team was spearheaded by Pastor Sewdat Sewpersaud and based at Harvest Time Bible Church, located in Letter Kenny, Berbice-Corentyne, Guyana, from where they conducted outreach ministries to outlying communities, public squares and markets, and in schools and orphanages.
Here are some visual memories of the team's endeavours!

Guyana Overview
Originally named British Guiana, this former British colony is situated on the north coast of South America, surrounded by Venezuela, Suriname and Brazil. Guyana is the only English-speaking country in South America, and the name of the country finds its root in the indigenous word "guiana" meaning "land of many waters". Most of this beautiful country is covered in tropical rainforest and is known for its rich reserves in bauxite, gold, timber, rice, sugar cane, and more recently, offshore oil reserves.
Since gaining its independence from the UK in 1966, Guyana has struggled immensely with overcoming poverty – a direct result of major political changes, corruption and poor economic policy decision-making. Today, Guyana features one of the highest poverty rates in the Latin America and Caribbean region. Guyana is now poised to become the fourth-largest offshore oil producer in the world. Nevertheless, to date, despite the oil boom, poverty has continued to prevail across the country.
